As a symbol of the Papacy, they recall the promise that Christ made to Peter, “I will give you the keys to the kingdom of Heaven; whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in Heaven and whatever you loosed on earth shall be loosed in Heaven.” (Matthew 16: 19)Along with the umbrellino and tintinnabulum, the keys are a symbol of the Basilica’s continuous relationship with the Holy Father in Rome.
