Description R. summersi ‘Sauce’ is a moderately large species in the genus Ranitomeya. This terrestrial frog occurs only in several isolated forested areas along Rio Huallaga in the semi arid region near Sauce and Chazuta, Peru. This locale persists in the humid valleys around Laguna Azul in Sauce. Alarmingly, R. summersi is listed as Endangered on the IUCN Red List due to deforestation for agricultural expansion. They do well in pairs, trios, or groups; lots of leaf litter and plants for visual barriers should be provided. The vivarium may be slightly drier as this species inhabits drier forests than most other dendrobatids. Though terrestrial, they will use all of the vertical space most of us hobbyists can realistically provide in normal size vivaria. R. summersi ‘Sauce’ is probably the most robust Ranitomeya locale we’ve kept. Our females usually lay 4-5 eggs per clutch, while all other Ranitomeya species we keep lay up to 3 eggs.
